Congratulations to Professor Austin Strange on receiving the Outstanding Young Researcher Award (OYRA) for 2023-2024!
This prestigious accolade is granted to young researchers under 40 who demonstrate exceptional research quality.
Professor Strange aims to pursue research that is rigorous, public-facing and focused on important but often misunderstood topics in international relations. China’s consistently evolving global economic engagements, including its overseas infrastructure and development finance, have been one of the most important and controversial topics in international relations in recent decades.
Professor Strange’s research examines the nature and impacts of China’s historical and contemporary roles in international development, global infrastructure provision, and other foreign economic policy domains. He is grateful to work with passionate and inspiring students and colleagues at HKU and globally.
The University of Hong Kong has a strong tradition in research, for which the University has achieved international acclaim and local & regional prominence.
Professor Strange received the University Early Career Teaching Award in 2022.
Austin Strange is Associate Professor of International Relations in the Department of Politics and Public Administration. He researches and teaches Chinese foreign policy, international political economy, and international development. Austin’s current research focuses on China’s historical and contemporary roles in the world economy.
Currently Austin is a Public Intellectuals Program Fellow with the National Committee on US-China Relations. In 2021-2022 he was a Wilson China Fellow at the Wilson Center and was previously a fellow with the Columbia-Harvard China and the World Program. He received a Ph.D. in Government from Harvard University, M.A. from Zhejiang University, and B.A. from the College of William & Mary.
Austin received HKU’s Early Career Teaching Award in 2022.
