2 CWP alum names Project Syndicate's 30 top Forward Thinkers

CWP alums Zongyuan Zoe Liu & Yeling Tan were named among a small cadre of "Recognizing Voices Who Will Shape the Future of Global Discourse"

As the world grapples with escalating economic and political upheavals, fact-based commentary and analysis are more vital than ever. As old orthodoxies are called into question, there is a growing demand for new voices capable of challenging established wisdom, providing insight into evolving technologies and economic trends, and countering misinformation.

Project Syndicate’s Forward Thinkers list aims to recognize and spotlight emerging intellectual innovators. It brings together 30 influential voices from academia, policymaking, civil society, and the private sector. These individuals tackle a wide range of critical issues, from climate change and geopolitics to the future of capitalism and the health of liberal democracy. Each participant is a leader in their field, and we believe their insights will not only shape public discourse within their respective countries but also have a growing impact on the global stage in the years to come.

Assembling such a list, of course, is a tricky and somewhat risky endeavor. To ensure our Forward Thinkers list reflects a wide array of perspectives, fields, and regions, we consulted Project Syndicate’s extensive network of contributors, as well as our readers. The final selection was carefully chosen by Project Syndicate’s editors with the aim of showcasing voices we believe will help shape and illuminate political debates in the years to come.

Yeling Tan, Professor of Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford, is a nonresident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and the author, most recently, of Disaggregating China, Inc.: State Strategies in the Liberal Economic Order (Cornell University Press, 2021).

Zongyuan Zoe Liu, Senior Fellow for China Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, is Adjunct Assistant Professor of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and the author of Can BRICS De-dollarize the Global Financial System? (Cambridge University Press, 2022) and Sovereign Funds: How the Communist Party of China Finances Its Global Ambitions (Harvard University Press, 2023), which won the 2024 PROSE Award in Business, Finance, and Management. Her research focuses on international finance, sovereign wealth funds, industrial policies, and the geoeconomics of the energy transition.
