Please join the Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs for a private roundtable discussion about economic contingency planning for a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan. We will be joined by Hugo Bromley from the University of Cambridge and Eyck Freymann from the Hoover Institution, co-authors of the report "On Day One: An Economic Contingency Plan for a Taiwan Crisis." The discussion will focus on several key questions, including:
-
What role should sanctions and other tools of economic statecraft play in U.S. strategy to deter a Chinese invasion of Taiwan?
-
In the event of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, how can the U.S. government best manage decoupling the American economy from the Chinese economy?
-
What steps should the U.S. government and the private sector take to prepare for a possible Taiwan crisis?
The roundtable will be held as a hybrid event on Tuesday, September 17, 2024
Please note, this invitation is non-transferable and only participants who register in advance will receive Zoom log-in instructions.
The discussion will be held under Chatham House Rules: participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed, nor may one cite the CGEP meeting as the source of the information.
This event is sponsored by Center on Global Energy Policy (CGEP) and co-sponsored by the China and the World Program (C&WP)
