Justin K. Canfil is a CWP fellow for the 2021-2022 academic year. His research examines the governance of emerging technologies. He holds concurrent affiliations with the Harvard Belfer Center and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

Drawing on extensive archival research, formally-motivated experiments, and textual data, his work investigates how states manage emergent controversies in times of rapid technological change. He is especially interested in the relationship between US-China relations and the future of international security, international law, and arms control.

Justin’s research on the theme of technology law and strategy has been supported by the National Science Foundation, a China Fulbright Scholarship, the US Department of State (via the Wilson Center), and the Department of Education (FLAS). He is expected to receive his Ph.D. from Columbia University summer 2021, and has held fellowships at Harvard, Oxford, Peking University, and the London School of Economics.
